Hand sanitiser or Hand wash? What is more efficient and a new solution for the construction industry

May 1, 2020

Wednesday marked World Day for Safety and Health at Work and what an appropriate time for us to think about how our actions can prevent future work-related deaths, injuries and illnesses, particularly during an unprecedented pandemic.

The theme for 2020 is Stop the pandemic: Safety and health at work can save lives. So here at Productivity Bootcamp we decided to review how we could best achieve this and began reviewing whether sanitiser is a viable solution for our business and the industry as a whole.

With COVID-19 spreading across the globe, people began rushing to stores to purchase bulk amounts of hand sanitiser in an attempt to protect themselves from the virus. We saw shelves completely bare and sanitiser became difficult to purchase, even for our much needed health workers.

So it begs the question, is hand sanitiser more effective than hand wash or should it simply be used when access to hand wash and water is not available?

Many government health bodies around the world along with global health organisations including The Centre for Disease Control & Protection and the World Health Organisation have given advice to state that hand wash and water is always the best option for ensuring clean and hygienic hands. They recommend the use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers only in the event that access to hand wash and water is not available.

So the key here is to ensure as much access to water and soap as possible, a thought that seemed challenging for construction sites until the pandemic got people thinking differently…

Here at Productivity Bootcamp, we received a generous donation from Think Outside the Square of a Mobile Handwashing Station called MOH. MOH provides hand washing facilities that are not reliant on a connection to running water but rather utilises a barrel system. This is perfect for construction sites that can not tap into existing water facilities.
